Services in ScaleGrid are fully managed deployments of your critical infrastructure components, designed to simplify and optimize the operation of your workloads. These managed services relieve you from the complexities of infrastructure management by automating many operational tasks and providing an intuitive interface for controlling your deployments.

**What is a Managed Service?**
A managed service means ScaleGrid handles the heavy lifting — including provisioning, ongoing maintenance, performance monitoring, backups, security, and updates — allowing you to focus entirely on your applications and business logic without worrying about the underlying infrastructure.

**Deployment Flexibility and Version Control**
ScaleGrid allows you to deploy services either as standalone instances or as multiple instances distributed across different clusters, regions, or even cloud providers. This flexibility ensures high availability and resilience tailored to your business needs. You also have full control over the service versions you deploy, enabling you to choose when to update or upgrade your services. This version management helps minimize disruptions by letting you test and schedule upgrades at your convenience.

**Instance Customization and Scheduling**
Each service instance can be customized with detailed node affinity and anti-affinity rules. This lets you control exactly where your workloads run, optimizing performance and fault tolerance by spreading or concentrating instances as needed. You also configure storage options per instance, selecting the storage type and size that best meet your performance and capacity requirements.

Additionally, autoscaling capabilities allow your services to automatically adjust resource allocation based on real-time demand or predefined rules, ensuring efficient handling of uneven traffic patterns while optimizing costs.

**Automatic Health Checks and Self-Healing**
To enhance service resilience, each instance is continuously monitored through automatic health checks. If an instance becomes unresponsive or fails a health check, the system automatically attempts to recover it. This self-healing capability minimizes downtime and ensures your services remain highly available, without requiring manual intervention. By maintaining the desired service state proactively, ScaleGrid helps you deliver uninterrupted performance even in the face of transient or node-level failures.

**Organizational Features**
Labels and metadata can be attached to your instances, making it easier to organize, filter, and track resources, especially in complex environments with many deployments. These tools streamline management and reporting, allowing for quick identification and grouping of service instances based on your own criteria.

**Backup Management**
ScaleGrid provides comprehensive backup management features, enabling you to define backup types, select specific instances for backup, schedule backup frequency, and set retention and rotation policies. Importantly, you fully own your Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO), allowing you to tailor backup and restore strategies to meet your specific business continuity and disaster recovery requirements. This control ensures your data is protected and recoverable in a way that aligns precisely with your operational needs.

**Alerting and Monitoring**
Integrated alerting capabilities keep you informed about critical events such as performance degradation, failures, or when thresholds are exceeded. This proactive notification system helps you maintain service reliability and uptime.

Complementing alerts, built-in monitoring dashboards offer deep insights into service usage, resource consumption, and historical trends, allowing you to analyze and optimize your deployments over different time frames.

**Role-Based Authorization**
Security and access control are paramount. ScaleGrid’s role-based authorization system enables you to securely manage user permissions across your organization, ensuring that only authorized personnel can access, modify, or manage your services and configurations. This layered security approach helps maintain compliance and protects sensitive data and infrastructure.

**Encryption in Transit and at Rest**
To ensure data confidentiality and integrity, ScaleGrid implements encryption for both data in transit and data at rest:

*   **Encryption in transit** protects your data as it moves between systems. ScaleGrid always enforces encryption in transit using publicly signed TLS certificates, with automatic certificate rotation every 90 days to maintain strong security standards.
    
*   **Encryption at rest** secures your stored data. In Dedicated Hosting (DH), this is fully implemented and managed by ScaleGrid at the infrastructure level. In Bring Your Own Cluster (BYOC) environments, encryption at rest must be configured within your own cluster — typically at the storage or worker node level — giving you full control over how it's implemented.

Services

A backup locale is a logical destination where backups of your managed services are stored safely and reliably. Backups play a critical role in ensuring business continuity — they allow you to recover from data loss, corruption, or unexpected incidents like outages or accidental deletions. With a well-defined backup strategy, you can restore services quickly and reduce downtime during disaster recovery scenarios.

Each backup locale is associated with a specific set of cloud resources, giving you control over where backups are stored. This allows you to align backup storage with geographic or compliance requirements, or simply optimize for redundancy and accessibility.

Backup locales serve as the anchor for your backup configuration, regardless of whether your backups are of logical type (such as technology-native exports) or physical type (such as volume or disk snapshots). When using logical backups, your backups will be stored in your choosen object storage.

You can view and manage all backups performed within a backup locale. This includes listing available backups, identifying the managed service each backup belongs to, and deleting individual backups when they are no longer needed.

Each backup locale also provides a real-time status, helping you monitor its health and connectivity.

You also have fine-grained control over who can access and manage each backup locale within ScaleGrid. Access is governed by roles — only users with roles explicitly granted access to a backup locale will be able to use or modify it. This ensures secure delegation and limits exposure of sensitive backup configurations across teams.

To improve organization and searchability, you can assign labels to each backup locale. These labels help you quickly locate and filter resources across your ScaleGrid environment. In the case of physical cloud-based backups, these labels are also propagated to the underlying cloud resources, giving you consistency and traceability across both your internal view and your cloud infrastructure.

**Encryption and Security**

Encryption is critical to protecting your data both during transfer and while stored. ScaleGrid supports two key types of encryption:

*   **Encryption in transit** — protects your data while it's moving between systems (e.g., between your service and a backup locale).
    
*   **Encryption at rest** — secures your data while it's stored on disk or in object storage.
    

In **Dedicated Hosting (DH)** environments, both encryption in transit and at rest are fully enforced by ScaleGrid:

*   All data transfers are protected using publicly signed TLS certificates, which are automatically rotated every 90 days.
    
*   Data is always encrypted at rest using secure, platform-managed encryption mechanisms.
    

In **Bring Your Own Cluster (BYOC)** setups, encryption behavior depends on how your storage systems are configured:

*   **Encryption in transit** is only guaranteed if your underlying storage (e.g., S3-compatible endpoint or discsnapshot) is correctly configured with a valid certificate and enforces HTTPS connections.
    
*   **Encryption at rest** depends entirely on the encryption policies of the storage backend you connect to the backup locale.

Backup Locales 

A Cluster represents the connection between **Scalegrid.ai** and the infrastructure where your managed services are provisioned and operated. It acts as a bridge between our control plane and your cloud or on-premise environment, allowing Scalegrid to deploy, monitor, and manage your services seamlessly.

You will typically have one cluster per **region and cloud**, but a single cluster can support multiple service deployments — providing flexibility, reusability, and simplified resource management.

Your service deployments can span across multiple clusters, enabling **multi-region and multi-cloud redundancy, disaster recovery, and low-latency access** for end-users.

Each cluster encapsulates the configuration required to access and manage resources in a specific cloud and region.

For users **transitioning from the legacy Scalegrid platform** (console.scalegrid.io), a **cluster is equivalent to a cloud profile** from the previous system.

Clusters can be configured for **public or private cloud environments**, depending on your deployment strategy and compliance requirements.

**Clusters are isolated by design**, meaning deployments on one cluster do not affect others. This provides strong fault isolation and simplifies environment separation (e.g., dev, staging, prod).

You also have fine-grained control over who can access and manage each cluster within Scalegrid. Access is governed by **role-based permissions** — only users with roles explicitly granted access to a cluster can view or modify it. This ensures secure delegation and limits exposure of sensitive configurations across teams.

To improve organization and visibility, you can assign **labels** to each cluster. These labels help you quickly locate and filter resources across your Scalegrid environment. In BYOC (Bring Your Own Cluster) deployments, these labels are also propagated to the underlying infrastructure, ensuring consistency and traceability across both Scalegrid and your cluster environment.

Clusters 

Users are the backbone of managing secure and efficient access within your organization.

By defining and managing users, you control who can interact with your ScaleGrid platform and its resources.

Assigning roles to users ensures that access is both secure and appropriate, granting permissions tailored to each individual’s responsibilities.

Through these assigned roles, you can granularly control access to critical resource management areas such as Services, Clusters, and Backup Locales, maintaining tight security and operational integrity.


Users 

Roles are fundamental building blocks for **managing access and permissions** within your organization’s ScaleGrid environment.

**What Are Roles?**  
Roles are predefined sets of permissions that determine what actions a user can perform and which resources they can access. Instead of assigning permissions individually to each user, roles group related permissions into a single entity that can be assigned to multiple users.

**What Are Roles Used For?**  
Roles provide a simple, scalable way to control and restrict access to the ScaleGrid platform’s features and resources, such as clusters, services, backups, and more. They help enforce security policies and operational governance by defining who can view, modify, or manage specific resources.

**Key Benefits of Using Roles:**

- **Centralized Access Control:** Easily assign and update permissions for multiple users by managing roles instead of individual user settings.
- **Least Privilege Principle:** Assign only the permissions needed for a user’s job, reducing security risks.
- **Operational Efficiency:** Simplify onboarding, offboarding, and permission changes by managing roles.
- **Security and Compliance:** Enforce strict access policies, audit who has access to what, and ensure compliance with organizational standards.

By defining and assigning roles thoughtfully, you maintain secure, manageable, and transparent control over your platform access.


Roles 

Within the Organization settings, you can configure key details such as your organization name, contact email, and the default role assigned to newly invited users in order to ensure consistent access control across your team.

Your organization status determines your access level within the platform. New organizations begin in **trial** mode, allowing you to explore the platform with limited resource deployment and restricted use of autoscaling capabilities. Once you add a valid credit card, your organization automatically transitions from **trial** to **enabled**, unlocking the full functionality of the platform.

If a payment fails, your organization status changes to **disabled**. In this state, your managed services will be automatically brought down (without data loss) to prevent unnecessary costs. These services will resume seamlessly once a successful payment is processed and your organization is re-enabled.

You can update your credit card and manage organization-level settings directly from this section, ensuring continuous access and control over your ScaleGrid environment.

Organizations

Audit provides full visibility into all user actions within ScaleGrid. Every operation, whether it’s creating, updating, or deleting — is recorded with detailed information. For updates, the system also captures what was changed.

Each audit entry includes:

*   Username – who performed the action

*   Operation – created, updated, or deleted

*   Details – what was changed (including property level details for updates)

*   Address – where the action originated from (IP)

*   Timestamp – when the action occurred

With this, ScaleGrid ensures accountability and traceability across all operations.
